AcersAcer CultivationAcer palmatum varieties are small hardy deciduous trees otherwise known as Japanese maples. Most cultivars are small, slow growing trees ideal for containers or smaller garden. Acers prefer a slightly acidic, sandy, well-drained soil with a reasonable amount of organic matter. Most will adapt to other soil types but very wet or too alkaline soils should be avoided. Most Acers have shallow root systems. When planting make sure the hole is large enough to accommodate all the roots. On heavier soils, break down the sides and the bottom of the hole incorporating organic matter if necessary. Green-leaved cultivars will tolerate full sun but in extremely hot conditions they may scorch. Some afternoon shade can prevent this from happening. Variegated varieties need partial shade to prevent the afternoon sun from scorching the foliage. Red-leaved varieties need some sun. They cannot develop their deep red colour without the benefit of full sun for some of the day. Japanese maples are very happy growing in pots. It is most important that the roots are not allowed to dry out. Use a good quality John Innes number 3 compost for planting. Feed pot grown maples in the spring and early summer. Re-pot every couple of years if necessary. |
