Shrubs
Shrub Cultivation
Planting Aspect
Shrubs will thrive in Sun, partial shade or full shade depending on variety.
Soil Type
Shrubs can be divided into 3 main groups with regard to soil ph. Some shrubs prefer an Acid soil ph below 7, Others Alkaline soils ph above 7 or shrubs which will tolerate either. Soils also vary in their consistency from light sandy soils to heavy clay soils. Therefore it is most important to ascertain soil type as this will determine your choice of shrubs.
Planting Distances
This will be variable according to the shrub.
Feeding
Begin feeding from March – April and through the growing season. Ensure ground is moist before commencing any feeding.
Watering
Shrubs should not be allowed to dry out especially if they are newly planted. Plenty of moisture should always be available for shrubs to thrive. Mulching is an excellent way to conserve moisture and to keep the roots cool.
Pest and Disease
Shrubs are susceptible to various pests and diseases but this can be kept to a minimum by good growing conditions. On my Nursery I use Biosept. This is an Organic Spray that if used on a regular basis will control Rust, Mildew and Blackspot. It will also improve the immune system of the plant resulting in stronger healthier growth. It also seems to have the added benefit of keeping Aphids at bay.
Dead Heading
Remove dead heads as blooms fade. This not only keeps the plant looking tidy but helps to keep the plant growing strongly and encourages further flowering.
Pruning
As a rule of thumb pruning after flowering is a good idea. This helps to keep the Shrub growing strongly as well as tidying the plant up at the same time. Some shrubs require more specialist pruning at various times so always check pruning requirements of the particular shrub first.
